Life and Legacy

As Duke of Gloucester & King of England, Richard led a full and demanding life, with a multitude of responsibilities that had an impact on the well-being of the people he governed. These included military (both navy & army), every day peace-keeping through the administration of justice, and management of the kingdom’s assets of land & natural resources. He also supported their spiritual life in his contributions to & establishment of religious foundations of various types. He supported commerce, printing, learning, music & architecture.

Very little of this is known to the general public thanks to the historical emphasis on the picture of Richard painted by Tudor writers.

As time goes on, we hope to make available a fuller picture of Richard’s life and accomplishments, based mainly on sources from Richard’s lifetime, in order to separate the once-living man from the much better-known caricature.
